Toots Thielemans is the grand master of the Jazz harmonica. Stephane Grappelli is the grand master of Jazz violin. Together they’ve dominated their respective instruments for over half a century and now the two finally get an oppurtunity to play with one another.

Thielemans is often in a supportive role behind the many soothing Brazilian singers and performers. The atmospheric date surprisingly does not have any Antonio Carlos Jobim songs, instead emphasizing lesser-known tunes (other than Toots’ greatest hit “Bluesette”). Easily recommended to fans of Brazilian pop and jazz, this CD was soon followed

Toots Thielemans set the standard for exciting use of this musical instrument for jazz lovers. The chormonica was not his main instrument in his early years as I understand but jazz guitar. You will find him playing guitar on some cuts, chormonica on others cuts, and surprisingly he’s even known to just whistle in soloing.

Toots Thielemans. Probably best known for the haunting, melancholic harmonica part in John Barry’s film score for the 1969 film Midnight Cowboy, Toots Thielemans forged a name for himself playing with some of the giants of jazz.

Jean “Toots” Thielemans. “During the summer of 1951, I was playing a gig with my small group in a club north of Montreal.Between sets, Gordie Fleming (later to become Canada’s star accordionist) and I were sitting at the bar listening to the music of the George Shearing Quintet coming over the ever-present (in those days) table radio next to the cash register.

The Belgian-born musician Jean (Toots) Thielemans is unique. He is the only man on earth to have become reasonably rich and famous with his particularly odd trilogy of talents: He plays the harmonica.

This Toots Thielemans release is not one of his more memorable recordings because of the rather dated pop arrangements by Jack Andrews and Don Sebesky. Thielemans, who plays guitar and harmonica, and also whistles on some tracks, composed several of the songs, including the unremarkable “Big Boy” and “Yesterday and Today,” along with a remake of his huge hit “Bluesette.”
